Any one of Hiroshige's dynamic woodcuts containing a bird's-eye viewpoint, a high horizon line, and a thrusting diagonal line of water or landscape could have been an influence for Kirchner, who also must have been inspired by depictions of Japanese travelers bent over to shield themselves as they scurry through a rainstorm.
