Legion Launches Sunday Brunch
2/12/2007 Jewels & Jazz Features Local, Sustainable Delicacies from Bay Area's Artisan Farmers and Food Producers San Francisco, February 12, 2007—Long considered San Francisco’s most beautiful museum, visitors to the Legion of Honor will soon be able to savor local culinary treats, sublime jazz music provided by Bay Area musicians, and galleries filled with exquisite jewels, as the museum begins serving Sunday Brunch in conjunction with the upcoming exhibition Masterpieces of French Jewelry. Alongside views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Pacific Ocean and the Marin headlands, the Legion’s prix fixe brunch will debut on Sunday, February 11 in the elegant Legion Café. Brunch guests will be treated to live music by local jazz musicians, admission to the Legion’s galleries, and free docent tours, in addition to a seasonal four-course menu. Sunday Brunch service in the Legion Café will begin at 11AM, with the final seating at 2PM. The prix fixe meal, including museum admission, is $40 for adults and $16 for children under 12. Brunch guests may tour the galleries at their leisure or join in one of the various docent tours beginning at 1:30 and 3PM. The Sunday Brunch winter menu will feature such treats as Dungeness crab cake Benedict on sourdough croutons with organic eggs, Laura Chenel goat cheese and vegetable frittata with white truffle oil, and Scharffen Berger chocolate pots de crème. “Our intention is to make the Legion even more available and accessible to the community,” said John E. Buchanan, Jr., Director of Museums. “What better accompaniment to world-class art and exceptional views of the San Francisco Bay than a Sunday brunch accompanied by jewels and jazz?” During the month of February, Sunday Brunch at the Legion, will feature jazz musicians Chris Huson on piano and Gary Lilard on bass, performing Jazz, Blues, Boogie Woogie, and Bossa Nova. Chris and Gary have been performing together for 35 years and Gary leads his own group, Pulse Brasil. Mixed in with his Chicago roots, Huson’s music is a blend of bluesy jazz sounds. In March, Sunday Brunch at the Legion will feature musical performances by Sandy Cressman's "Homenagem ao Brasil". "Homenagem ao Brasil" is a group that celebrates the groove and passion of great Brazilian composers such as Hermeto Pascoal, Dori Caymmi, Edu Lobo, Milton Nascimento, and more, with original arrangements that stay true to the beauty of the compositions themselves. Sunday Brunch in April will feature with the waltzes and melancholic melodies of the gypsy jazz trio, Le Hot Jazz, who’ve enchanted audiences for over 15 years.
Making for a well-rounded Sunday Brunch at the Legion, is the opportunity for guests to partake in a free a docent tour at 1:30 or 3PM. Throughout the run of the exhibition,Masterpieces of French Jewelry, (February 10 – June 10) docent tours will focus on the inspiring designs, refined workmanship, and variety of French jewelry from works of the Art Nouveau period through contemporary pieces. Admission Fees and Hours The Legion of Honor is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors age 65 and older, $6 for youths ages 13–17, and children 12 and under are free. There is a $2 discount on paid admission upon presentation of a valid MUNI transfer or Fast Pass. Admission tickets to the Legion may be used on the same day for free entrance to the de Young. About the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco comprises the Legion of Honor and its sister museum, the de Young, making it the largest public arts institution in the city and one of the largest art museums in the United States.
