Opening of New de Young Features Bi-Level Museum Store and New Institutional Publications
3/1/2005 San Francisco, March 1, 2005--The new de Young Museum Store will open to the public on August 15, 2005, two months in advance of the Museum’s grand opening on October 15, 2005. Visitors will be treated to a uniquely designed, two-level museum store that features a wide range of new and relevant publications. The de Young Museum Store is a nonprofit retailer with a special focus on education; all of its revenues directly support the museum. Its primary objectives are twofold: to earn income that helps to sustain the museum’s programs and exhibitions, and to educate visitors through the sale of items that complement the collections and exhibitions. The Museum Store places particular emphasis on its broad assortment of art history books, which directly fulfill its educational mission; the titles offered for sale are specially chosen to enhance visitors’ understanding of the collections. The store also offers a stunning selection of objects that reflect an overview of global cultures and their arts and crafts. Visitors to the store will encounter a diverse mix of innovative and traditional items, ranging from organic and hand-painted ceramics by San Francisco artisans to traditional textiles realized in contemporary designs from Africa, India, and South America.
The retail space, designed by Charles Sparks & Co., will have entrances on the ground floor adjacent to the Diane B. Wilsey and Alfred S. Wilsey Court (the main gathering space inside the building) and on the lower level across from the Koret Auditorium. A Special Exhibition store, located on the lower level of the museum, will offer items specially chosen to complement the de Young’s temporary exhibitions, beginning with the inaugural showing of Daughter of Re: Hatshepsut, King of Egypt. On the ground floor, the store will offer design objects, jewelry, home and office accessories, and apparel from around the world. The lower level will feature a wide range of art books and museum publications, educational children’s books and toys, posters, prints, and stationery related to the museum’s collections. The store will also debut signature lines of products developed exclusively for the de Young by local, national, and international artists and designers. These select items are based on the building’s unique architectural design (by award-winning Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron) and the permanent collections.
The de Young Museum Store will be open during regular museum hours. Entrance to the stores does not require paid admission to the museum. Prior to the Museum’s grand opening, the Museum Store will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.
